Assistant Financial Controller
Our client, an ecommerce and retail company, is looking to hire an assistance to the financial controller. The Assistant Controller will support the Controller by assuming ownership of core accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role is designed to offload day-to-day and recurring Controller responsibilities, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and follow-through. The Assistant Controller must be highly proficient in creating, reading, analyzing, and acting on financial reports, identifying issues proactively, and ensuring corrective action is taken. This individual will function as a trusted second-in-command in the accounting department and serve as a reliable extension of the Controller. Responsibilities: Assume day-to-day responsibility for core accounting functions delegated by the Controller Ensure all transactions are complete, accurate, and properly documented Maintain consistency in accounting policies and procedures Prepare and maintain recurring financial reports, including: Profit & Loss statements, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow reports, Budget vs. actual analyses Create customized management reports as needed Review reports for: Accuracy, Variances, Trends and anomalies Clearly explain financial results to the Controller and flag issues before they become problems Take action on findings, not just report them Take full ownership of assigned Controller duties, ensuring: Deadlines are met without reminders, Work is completed correctly the first time, Issues are elevated appropriately and timely Identify inefficiencies or risks and propose improvements Ensure compliance with company policies and accounting standards Review aging reports (A/R, A/P) and follow up on discrepancies Ensure balance sheet accounts are fully reconciled and supported The Assistant Controller must not simply generate reports, but must be able to: Interpret financial data, Identify risks and opportunities, Make recommendations and Follow through to resolution Qualifications: 5+ years of hands-on as an Assistant Controller or strong Senior bookkeeper experience Strong knowledge of Financial reporting Advanced proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks Desktop/Online, or similar) Strong Excel skills and report manipulation ability Highly organized and detail-oriented Strong sense of ownership and follow-through Comfortable operating independently once expectations are set Able to communicate financial information clearly and confidently Proactive problem-solver, not purely task-driven Success Criteria (What “Doing the Job Well” Looks Like) The Controller can safely delegate responsibilities without needing to double-check Financial reports are accurate, timely, and actionable Issues are identified early and resolved Reporting supports informed decision-making Location: Brooklyn NY Salary: $120K
