Software Product Owner
Our client, a payroll company serving mid-market businesses, is seeking a Software Product Owner. This is a hands-on Software Product Owner (PO) role at the center of a platform’s next growth phase. The individual will report to the engineering lead, you’ll be the bridge between stakeholders and the engineering team, running sprints, writing specs, interviewing stakeholders, and making sure what gets built actually solves the right problems. You’ll have real input on priorities and roadmap direction, while staying grounded in day-to-day delivery. Responsibilities: Own roadmap priorities and scope decisions, with direct input on what gets built and when Translate payroll and HR requirements into well-defined user stories and acceptance criteria Run sprint ceremonies and keep the backlog healthy, refined, and ready for engineering Interview stakeholders to surface requirements and validate priorities against real business needs Partner with engineering throughout design, build, and release to ensure features land correctly Coordinate with client-facing teams to capture feedback and ensure delivered features meet operational needs Validate that delivered features meet requirements and function as expected before release Own internal documentation and knowledge management to keep the team aligned as the platform grows Qualifications: 3–5 years of experience as a Product Owner or similar role in a software product environment Proven ability to write clear, detailed specs and user stories that engineering can execute on without back-and-forth Hands-on experience with backlog and project management tools such as Jira or Linear Comfortable owning decisions and tradeoffs in a small, fast-moving team with limited process overhead Experience working on compliance-driven or enterprise systems where precision and accuracy matter Payroll or HR domain knowledge is a strong plus, candidates with this background will hit the ground running. We’re open to the right product person who can learn quickly. Experience leading a platform migration or modernization effort, particularly replacing third-party systems with in-house capabilities is a plus Prior exposure to client-facing or implementation teams, understanding how software lands in the real world is a meaningful edge Location: Brooklyn NY Salary: $130K
