Head of Finance / Controller
A payroller company is seeking an experienced, highly driven, detail-oriented, and tech-savvy finance professional to run and execute all aspects of financial operations, including multi-state payroll, tax compliance, time and attendance, accrual management, cash management, and client billing.
This hands-on role provides critical support to our finance team, combining leadership responsibility with direct ownership of day-to-day accounting and finance functions.
The ideal candidate is proactive, analytical, an excellent communicator, comfortable working across multiple systems and platforms, and able to collaborate closely with executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight and Execution
Directly manage daily financial operations and reporting while ensuring regulatory compliance
Handle or closely oversee federal, state, and local payroll and tax processing
Execute multi-state payroll, tax filings, banking activities, and ACH transactions
Lead and participate in internal and external audits to ensure accuracy and compliance
Oversee setup, training, and management of payroll and time and attendance software systems
Financial Planning and Analysis
Build and maintain budgets, forecasts, and KPI reporting
Manage cash flow, credit lines, and financial risk exposure
Provide financial insights and recommendations to leadership for real-time decision making
Process Optimization and Technology
Implement and improve workflows to reduce manual work
Utilize business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Tableau for reporting and dashboards
Implement and manage ERP systems and automation solutions to improve efficiency
Vendor and Expense Management
Negotiate vendor contracts and manage vendor relationships
Review, approve, and validate vendor invoices
Review and manage third-party agreements and contracts
Cash and Banking Management
Manage bank relationships and daily cash movement
Track all transactions for accuracy and purpose
Upload and process banking files to support operations
Requirements
5+ years of experience in a hands-on controller or senior finance role
Strong knowledge of tax compliance and multi-state payroll
Proven experience in cash management, forecasting, and financial planning
Proficiency in QuickBooks and experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite or SAP
Experience with business intelligence and automation tools
Willingness to learn and run payroll and time and attendance systems
Demonstrated ability to build processes and enforce internal controls
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with leadership
