Orthopedic Surgery APP
Position Title Orthopedic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) Position Summary The Orthopedic Surgery APP provides comprehensive musculoskeletal care in the inpatient, outpatient, and operative settings. The APP collaborates closely with orthopedic surgeons to evaluate, diagnose, and manage orthopedic conditions, assist in surgical procedures, and ensure continuity of care across the perioperative spectrum. Key Responsibilities 1. Inpatient / Hospital Responsibilities Perform history and physical exams for orthopedic patients Manage postoperative patients (fractures, joint replacements, spine, trauma) Conduct daily rounds and coordinate discharge planning Respond to consults from ED and inpatient units Manage pain control, anticoagulation, and postoperative complications 2. Operative Responsibilities First assist in orthopedic procedures (joint replacement, trauma, sports, spine as applicable) Assist with positioning, exposure, instrumentation, and closure Ensure appropriate perioperative protocols are followed Participate in surgical case flow and efficiency optimization 3. Outpatient / Clinic Responsibilities Evaluate new and follow-up orthopedic patients Diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions Perform joint injections, aspirations, and splinting/casting Order and interpret imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT) Provide pre- and postoperative care 4. Procedural Responsibilities Joint injections (knee, shoulder, hip, etc.) Fracture reduction and splinting Wound care and staple/suture removal 5. Call & Coverage Responsibilities Participate in orthopedic call rotation Provide ED coverage for fractures and acute injuries Assist with trauma cases and urgent surgical needs 6. Documentation & Compliance Complete timely operative notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries Ensure compliance with billing and regulatory requirements Support quality metrics (infection rates, LOS, readmissions) 7. Collaboration & Leadership Work closely with orthopedic surgeons, PT/OT, nursing, and case management Participate in service line development and efficiency initiatives Assist in onboarding and mentoring new APPs Qualifications Required Graduate of accredited PA or NP program Board certification (PA-C or NP) Active state license (or eligibility) DEA license (or eligibility) BLS certification Preferred Prior orthopedic or surgical experience First assist experience ACLS certification (hospital-based roles) Skills & Competencies Strong musculoskeletal exam skills Procedural proficiency (casting, injections, reductions) Ability to function in OR and high-volume clinic Strong teamwork and communication Salary:$150,000plus benefits plus incentives up to 15,000 per year
